Favourite Travel Photos - My 7 Super Shots

A couple of days ago, a fellow travel blogger from “I Wander” tagged me in his blog post entitled “Favorite Travel Photos - My 7 Super Shots”. I have to be honest here. I have mixed feelings about it. Happy and flattered. Nervous and worried. And not to forget feeling a bit stressed out too! :-) The idea (or the game that I'm now taking part in), from HostelBookers 7 Super Shots, is to select 7 of your best travel photos that fit into a certain category or theme, share them all in one blog post, and then nominate 5 other travel bloggers to do the same by including a link to their blog in that same post.

Having hundreds of folders and thousands of photos to choose from made the photo selection process quite tricky. Having categories and themes to consider, made it worse :-S  Not that I have many good photos in the first place :-D  It’s just that I have to scour through most of them, which took a bit of time. Going through them brought me back memories. Not just memories of places and people. But also of some other things long forgotten. Bad and good. Which nevertheless still brought a smile to my face... But I digress... :-)

So... before I wander off the track any further, here they are, my 7 favourite shots – which I think fit their respective theme – from some of my previous trips.

#1 – Takes my breath away

There’re some competitions for this theme but to me this photo just edged it a bit. Not in terms of photo quality. But in terms of experience. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is nothing short of grand. The first time I was there, I had arrived late in the afternoon and went on to spend some time inside the masjid. It was already dark when I went out again. To walk down its “courtyard” and then to turn around to face the masjid in such a clear night really took my breath away.

[Click here for more photos of the masjid]

#2 – Makes me dream

Not exactly the best photo of Paris that I have in my collection. It was winter. It was cold and a bit foggy. And I was almost frozen standing on top of Arc de Triomphe. So Eiffel Tower doesn’t look as sharp in the photo as some might have liked. But I like this photo. Cheesy as it may sound, it makes me dream of Paris.

#3 – Makes me think

What?  Who?  How?  When?  Why?

(Among them: Is this really where the Tomb of the Primes was hidden? ;-) How would I manage to walk back down the mountain in such a heat? ;-) )

[Click here for more photos of Petra]

#4 – Makes me laugh or smile

Again, not exactly the best of photos but when I first saw this tooth pick holder in a novelty shop in Brussels, I sure laughed out loud. What a cool idea. Although definitely not cool if you do it for real.

#5 – Makes my mouth water

*gone to have some hot waffles*

#6 – Tells a story

Yes, I know, I know... this is definitely a cliché to most but I am sure it fits the theme, right? I just wish that I could have taken a symmetrical one but it was quite hard actually as there were lots and lots of people around, all trying to take the same photos. Next time, remind me to do it differently, please?

#7 – My most proud of (aka most worthy of National Geographic shot)

Funny that I have chosen this one as my most proud of (can’t bear to write aka most worthy of... here :-) ) even though I actually tend to prefer to take photos of places rather than of people. I took this in the Corniche in Mutrah area in Muscat while taking a break after a long walk along the Corniche.

So what do you think of these photos?  There're a few competitions for some categories while for one or two other categories, it's totally the opposite.  I have problems too in identifying a correct theme for some of my favourite photos, they eventually didn't make the cut.  For example, the photo of Florence above makes me laugh because it reminds me of the day trip a few friends and I had made while we were in Rome some time late last year.  It would take a bit of writing though to explain why the photo would fall under "makes me laugh or smile"...

In the end, I have chosen these based on them being my favourites for each theme, which means they are not necessarily the best.  But still, I would love to hear some feedback from you guys.

In the meantime, I'm tagging the following fellow travel bloggers to see if they are up to this task as well because I'd really love to see what they consider as their best or most favourite shots :-)

3.  Devi @ Devi da Lil' Devil
4.  Sarah @ The Hedonista

  5. Your pics are amazing ! I really like your first picture, I stare at it for a few seconds before reading! Love your Paris & Taj Mahal. Remind me of my India trip when I was in Taj Mahal last year, I could not take my eyes off them, was there until it was closed...I can't forget how sunset makes the white marbles changed to slightly pinkish..!

    1. Hi there, Jess! Thanks for dropping by and for the compliment on the photos. When you said the first picture, did you mean the Florence one or the mosque one? (I know, it's actually my fault for the confusion ;-))

Re: Taj Mahal at sunset. That must have been really beautiful. I can only imagine it now. My friend and I spent only a short time there in Agra one morning/ early afternoon before driving off to Jaipur.

    1. Hi, Rayyan! Thanks. Jaipur is just a few hours drive away from Taj Mahal. You can combine New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur in one trip if you have 5 days to spare. For me, it's totally worth it! :-)

The 1st time i looked at photo 7, i remembered mano maniam, the actor...got resemblance la.. I don't really like Paris (no offence, ya) but pic no 2 is my fav.. Looks a bit mysterious gitu... The only thing i like about Paris is Disneyland..ha..ha...!

    1. Hi, Farikica! Thanks for the compliment. Mano Maniam? Hahaha! I can see some slight resemblance now that you mentioned it, heheh!

I can understand that Paris is not exactly everyone's cup of tea. Personally I find it too crowded with tourists. I do however love its offering of art museums... taking a stroll along the Seine... sitting outside a cafe, sipping coffee while people watching... shopping... and many other activities too ;-) Unfortunately haven't got the chance to go to Paris Disneyland yet though! :-S

    1. I have the same problem. Everytime I see photos of places that I have been to, I long to go back and see those places again and again...

Think I may need to go and have a slow talk with my bank ;-)

    2. A few of my friends also took exactly the same photo as the waffle photo.. I bet it's from the same shop... How come i didn't notice the waffle shop when i was there..? Perhaps i was too busy tasting the chocs...;)

      Delete
    3. Farikica, there is a possibility that they come from the same shop :-D I took this one at a small shop somewhere between Grand Place and Manneken Pis. There were at least a couple more waffles outlets nearby the area though. Not sure how you could have missed them if you had walked from Grand Palace to Manneken Pis through the shortest possible route. But like you said, you were probably too preoccupied with chocolates. I remember there's a big chocolate shop almost right in front of this waffles outlet :-D

I also love the thin-wafer-like biscuits that they have there in Belgium *drools*

By the way, yes, #7 is one of my favourites too. I don't know why but there is just something about the photo and the guy himself...

Yup, I walked in Petra. Went there in the morning and then climbed the hill under direct summer sunlight. By end of the day, I was sunburned :-S But I still enjoyed the trip!

  18. RBA,

Is this my first time commenting at this blog?

Hey, all your photos look like postcards. Maybe you can send me a postcard of one of these pictures above? That would be great! A postcard from Dubai (in which I don't think will ever visit. lol)

    Regards,
    Jard

    1. Hello there, Jard! Yup, I think it is! :-D Thanks for the compliment. You collect postcards? Re Dubai: You can easily include Dubai as a stopover destination while on the way to Europe or somewhere else in the Middle East, just by flying with Emirates. It's a good holiday destination in itself too! So you should never say no ;-)
