Ramblings from Saudi: How to Shop in Jeddah
![]() |
Most people would have read or heard about how women in Saudi Arabia are (supposedly) oppressed in many ways and that the men supposedly control the country, et cetera, et cetera… Well, I beg to differ. Believe it or not, men are somehow oppressed too in this admittedly male-dominated country. Especially the singles and those men who are without their family around. And especially when it comes to shopping at the many malls here in Jeddah.

Malaysia: Bloggers' Day Out (1) with Pahang Tourism - Lemang To'Ki
“We are stopping for lemang first”, said Encik Moni. “Huh, lemang?” I thought to myself. Yes, lemang, that Malaysian traditional food made of glutinous rice, coconut milk and a bit of salt, and cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick. The one that we usually find served in Malay open houses especially during Hari Raya (Eid ul-Fitr), celebrating the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
We were travelling in a van from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Lipis, Pahang for our first taste of a homestay programme in Kuala Medang. By we, I mean 6 Malaysian bloggers (Azreen Chan, Fiey Ahmad, Lilyriani, the lovely couple, Fahd and Zara, and yours truly), Encik Mohd Moni Ismail and his assistant/driver from Pahang Tourism. All the 6 bloggers have been selected by Pahang Tourism for a 3D/2N all expenses paid trip to Pahang, the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia, to experience and write about homestay programmes in the state. We’re scheduled to stay at 2 different homestays in different locations and visit a third one on our way back to Kuala Lumpur.

Ramblings from Saudi: How to Get a Haircut in Jeddah
![]() |
Getting a haircut in Jeddah should not really be a problem. There are plenty of barber outlets staffed by mostly Indian (or South Asian?) nationals. There are also hair salons, usually manned by Filipinos. And of course there are also Turkish barbers.
But me being adventurous (yeah, right!), no, I choose not to go to Indian barbers or Filipino hairdressers despite knowing that most of them can speak English. Instead I choose a nice Turkish salon near to my apartment.
