The transit afforded me the chance to try out the latest hotel in Kuala Lumpur, ACES Hotel, which has just opened its door in December 2020.

When I first found out about its location – in Kota Raya Complex – I was feeling rather sceptical. The building is actually an old shopping complex that was built in the 1960s and was popular up until the early 1990s (I think) before newer and more modern shopping malls took over. It reminds me of the time when I had to wait for my bus (the infamous Bas Mini Wilayah) on the steps of Kota Raya in order to get back to my college in the KL suburb of Cheras. It wasn’t exactly fun, but I digress. Today, there is still a bus terminal there, although now it is located right behind the building – a proof that the place still remains a centre for many folks in the capital city.
[ Click here to read more » ]Ramble and Wanderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03336881437780077950noreply@blogger.com0Kotaraya Complex, Level 5, 10, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Kuala Lumpur City Centre, 50050 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia3.1456388 101.6979836-25.164595036178845 66.5417336 31.455872636178846 136.8542336tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2877877240777118514.post-84156444389699569002020-10-28T23:00:00.035+08:002020-10-28T23:08:17.023+08:00Malaysia: 8 Fun Eco-Adventure Locations in Selangor

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Labuan, Malaysia’s Federal Territory in the Borneo part of the country, is not exactly a “stranger” to me. Well, at least not in name. At one point in my life, a CEO of an offshore financial company had asked me if I’d like to go work in Labuan. I went, “What? Labuan? So far away and what’s there anyway?” “Cheap cars and chocolates,” was the common answer at the time, which was not enough for me to consider visiting, let alone to move there.

Malaysians are well known for our passion for food and this is well reflected in our cuisine. The Malaysia that we see and experience today is a result of the mixing of three distinct cultures, which has given rise to Malaysian cuisine that are truly diverse. The three major influences - Chinese, Indian and Malay influences - can clearly be noticed in Malaysian cuisine. In some ways, one can say that Malaysian cuisine is somewhat like New York; some of the dishes didn't originate from here, but they have found a loving and forever home in Malaysia. In this post, we list down the top five popular dishes in Malaysia. If you are planning a vacation in Malaysia, you should definitely try these dishes, which you are guaranteed to love. And before you ask it, yes, food delivery is readily available for all of these delicious foods by FoodPanda Malaysia. You can order all of these dishes right from the comfort of your home or hotel room.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I’d been in Kuching for more than a week already when I was lying in my bed thinking what other “touristy” thing I should do the next day, one full free day that I’d left in the capital of Sarawak in Malaysian part of Borneo.

Apart from the first four days of my stay where I’d spent time watching the annual dragon boat race, the air show during Malaysian Air Force Open Day, and going to Sarawak Cultural Village, I’d not done anything much else apart from just walking around the city, taking in the architectural heritage of Kuching. It was my fifth visit to the cat city (in Malay, Kuching means cat, by the way), probably my most favourite city in the whole of Malaysia, so I have previously covered plenty of sights and attractions as listed in my “Top Things to Do and See in Kuching, Sarawak” blog post. There’s one popular place, however, that I still hadn’t been to during any of the previous trips here; and that place is Bako National Park, the oldest and smallest national park in Sarawak.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Back in November 2016, I had the opportunity to visit Sandakan, Sabah, in the Malaysian part of Borneo. Among the many places of interests that I went to was Sandakan Memorial Park, which is built on the site of what came to be known as Sandakan Death Marches during World War II. There’s a “hut” in the beautifully landscaped park, which has displays inside where I learnt about the horrors of the war that had happened right there in the area. There were about 2,500 prisoners of war in Sandakan, of which only 6 had survived. There are no graves there, however, as they had been relocated to a war memorial in Labuan.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Those who know me would know that I don’t personally go on a beach/island holiday. It’s not because I don’t enjoy such a holiday but my parents’ place in my hometown of Kuala Terengganu, on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is located just like 5 minutes’ drive or 15 minutes’ walk to a popular beach in town. I have however never shied away from a beach/island trip whenever I get an invitation from any party. That is despite me being able to turn probably 100 shades darker in no time at all the moment I land on an island. 😅

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you’re reading this, chances are we both have one thing in common; we love to travel. A life filled with adventures is something I always strive to go by each day. (Okay, so “each day” here might be a bit exaggerated but you know what I mean…) Hence, today’s entry will be about that! Let’s go on an adventure across Southeast Asia and see what’s in store for the thrill-seekers like us!

Before we go any further, have you heard anything about Traveloka offering Malindo Air promotion? I know they’re all about giving discounts and all, but I heard there are some online Malindo Air promotions going on till the end of the year, or is it until the next quarter?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Anyway, let’s get back to the adventure part of life!

And it’s no surprise once you get here that the city is often included in lists of the world’s most livable cities, beating out Sydney. Melbourne is known as the cultural hub of Australia, featuring a large array of galleries, performances and events, world-class restaurants, and most importantly, some of the best coffee.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tawau, in the Malaysian part of Borneo, is the main transit town for the many beautiful islands just off the southeast coast of Sabah. Many visitors would simply fly into Tawau Airport only to skip this town and head straight to the coastal town of Semporna to start their beach/island holiday. I thought my friends and I would be doing the same thing too when we flew there for our #SeaYouInSabah programme with Sabah Tourism Board a few months back. After all, what’s there in Tawau anyway, right? Bohey Dulang Island, Mataking Island, Sibuan Island and a few other islands were all waiting for us to explore, snorkel, dive and more, spending time in Tawau would seem like a waste of holiday time. Right...?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Museums and galleries perhaps would not be something at the top of the agenda for most of those planning to visit Jakarta, Indonesia. However, one might be surprised to know that there are some good museums in Indonesia’s capital city that are worth the time for a visit whether to learn more about the country, the city or even a specific cultural interest. Some are housed in historic buildings and are beautifully curated according to areas and regions, so much so visitors with vivid imagination might be reminded or even transported across the country to their favourite Bali villa rentals, for example.

It’s a given that when one doesn’t plan on visiting museums in the first place, s/he probably would not have allocated the time for such activities but here are my personal recommendations for 3 not-to-be missed museums, which have been selected based on their well curated exhibits and perfect locations so that you can easily squeeze them in into your itinerary if you are planning a trip to Jakarta. After all, visiting museums is a great (and not to forget cheap!) way to learn about a country’s history and culture.

Started in the 3rd quarter of 2016 by Cempaka Helicopters in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Kuala Lumpur Tourism Bureau, Ascend Sky Tours offers locals and visitors alike the opportunity to see the city like never before – from high up in the sky, around 1,500 feet up to be more exact. Using the centrally located Lake Titiwangsa Helipad, Ascend Sky Tours offer a unique chance for everyone to experience a helicopter ride and, at the same time, a bird’s eye view of Kuala Lumpur skyline at quite affordable rates.
Each post would cover just one item, where I’ll share some relevant tips and perhaps do some quick reviews as well, where applicable. And so, for this first post, it’s sunglasses. Sunglasses? Yup, sunglasses! 😎 Whether it’s for summer travels, or winter travels, and especially for daily use whilst out and about in Malaysia, sunglasses have become like one of my top travel essentials – because most people tend to forget about them, concentrating on the more obvious ones like chargers (phone/camera/laptop), travel plugs, etc. By putting it at the top of my list, it is most likely that I won’t forget bringing one during my travels. I’m pretty sure I don’t have to list down the benefits of wearing one, right?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In Malaysia, there is a tourism product/programme that’s called “homestay”. While many might confuse homestay as just staying in someone else’s house during their travels (be it through Airbnb, Couchsurfing and the likes), this tourism product is a lot more than that. It involves staying not just in someone else’s house but also provides a wider experience and unique way to not just travel like a local but also live like a local. This is because (approved) homestay programmes are mostly located in traditional kampongs or villages and offer a window into the local’s lifestyle through various activities (incl. culture, food/cooking, games, etc.) that may involve the whole community in the kampung and not just the homestay family. For foreigners, it’s probably the easiest way to get to know Malaysia beyond the big city destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Melaka. For locals - especially city dwellers - it gives them the opportunity to experience a real kampung life, which many might not have had the chance to experience.
